For starters, Mayer is Fresh to Death! This song as well as some of the others on his album are tastefully done to say the least. I know you passionately rep'd Detroit when it came to the track by Finale (who I strongly think is nowhere near as engaging as an artist nor relevant) but failed to mention Mayer Hawthorne's roots...? To your point though, I think the bigger picture is that does Detroit have some musical talent as a whole. I'm sorry I recently missed his concert :-(
